How To Find A Good Wife

Today I was joining in the fun on Twitter’s #unwifeable thread, and I got to thinking about what it takes for a girl to be, for lack of a better term, “wifeable.” Finding a good spouse is something that’s on every man’s mind, and it should be. It’s an important search. What does it take to find a good wife?

The person you marry is the most important decision you will ever make. Your wife will play a huge part in where you live, where you work, who your kids turn out to be, and probably even how you die (Hopefully she won’t be a direct cause of it). Since this is such a huge choice, you’d better get it right on the first try.

Now, I know someone is already thinking, “It’s not THAT big a deal, if she’s a loser, I’ll just divorce her.” It’s not that simple. I believe marriage is forever, but even if you don’t, you’ll still have this divorce in your past for the rest of your life.

If You Aim For Nothing…

You’ll hit it every time. What kind of girl are you looking for? How would you define “a good wife”? Take some time to sit down and put some ideas on paper. Are you looking for the kind of girl from Train’s “Meet Virginia” or a woman more like the one in Cake’s song “Short Skirt, Long Jacket”?

If you’re trying to find a good wife, the first natural thing to consider is where to look. Don’t marry girls you meet at bars, truck stops or in jail. Half the time those aren’t even girls. If you want to find someone you’ll connect with, keep your eyes open at places where you and Ms. Right might share a common interest, like at church or the gun club. If you already have one thing in common, you at least have something to talk about and something to build your relationship on.

By the way, going to Hooter’s to hit on the waitresses doesn’t count.

Stop Bad Marriages Before They Start

This one is simple but so many guys screw this up: Don’t date someone you wouldn’t marry. Tramps, alcoholics and Raider Fans are all bad choices. Is she controlling, needy or expensive?

If she annoys you as a girlfriend, get out before things start getting serious. And never, never date a girl who is cheating on someone else to be with you. What makes you think she won’t cheat on you someday?

Are You Gonna Go My Way?

This is probably the most important thing you can search for in a woman: someone who’s travelling the same road as you, someone who has the same dreams and goals. What are your plans? Have kids? Travel? Own a Business? Join the Military? Find someone who will walk with you through life.

The Final Test

Ask yourself this : If I were stuck in an elevator with her, would I want anyone to come rescue us? If the answer is anything but an emphatic “NO!” then it’s probably time to start thinking about an exit strategy.

Above all, be patient. The woman you marry should be someone you love to be with, someone you respect, someone you’re willing to bet your future on.
