Are You Man Enough? The Bataan Memorial Death March

Today is the annual Bataan Memorial Death March, a 26.2-mile race through the New Mexico Desert at White Sands Missile Range. It commemorates the long, grueling forced march of American POWs through the Philippine jungle in 1942. The story of these soldiers was commemorated in the book Ghost Soldiers and the movie The Great Raid.

Recently, a British soldier had to make a quick choice when a grenade landed on the rooftop where he and his commander were fighting. During an intense firefight in Afghanistan, a grenade came flying up from the ground, hit is commander in the chest and fell at their feet. Ray Vivier was finally buried this week. He perished in a fire set by arsonists after saving the lives of five people inside the house. He is most definitely a hero, but his story caught my attention, not because of how he lived, but because of the stark contrast between how he lived and how he will be remembered. Read more →
