“Mad Jack”, was a British soldier who fought throughout World War II armed with a longbow, arrows and a claymore. He once said “any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed.”

Jack Churchill (1906-1996) was a British officer during WWII, archer, bagpipe player, surfer and actor. He is most famous for the use of unconventional – more medieval – weapons in 20th century combat. During the assault of Sicily he led his men with a claymore around his waist, a longbow and arrows, and bagpipes under his arm.

In 1931 somebody left the Lieutenant Governor in charge and while at the helm (pun intended) he appointed several guys as Admirals for the State of Nebraska. Some notable members are: Gene Autry, Johnny Carson, George W. Bush, Jack Benny and Martin Luther King III.

Today is the annual Bataan Memorial Death March, a 26.2-mile race through the New Mexico Desert at White Sands Missile Range. It commemorates the long, grueling forced march of American POWs through the Philippine jungle in 1942. The story of these soldiers was commemorated in the book Ghost Soldiers and the movie The Great Raid.

Recently, a British soldier had to make a quick choice when a grenade landed on the rooftop where he and his commander were fighting. During an intense firefight in Afghanistan, a grenade came flying up from the ground, hit is commander in the chest and fell at their feet.
