William Ernest Henley (1849-1903) was a British poet who lived through hard times. He lost a leg to Tuberculosis at the age of twelve. I didn’t even know you could lose a limb to TB. He lost his only daughter when she was just five. The poem he wrote about overcoming hardship, Invictus, has served as an inspiration for many men, including Nelson Mandela.

I can’t remember when or where I first read this poem, but it was years ago, and its message has always rung in the back of my head. It not only provides a challenge toward manhood, but it also makes me stop to consider what a man is made of, what goes into having masculine character. That, plus it’s just some good poetry.
